Guest Post - My interaction with Doctors, Diabetologist
Life is full of surprises, blogging life is more so. It brings you to connect with bloggers riding the same wave length as you, giving immense satisfaction to your otherwise unnoticed feelings.
When I started blogging, I had little hope of anyone ever reading it, or commenting. My innate faith in connecting with people seemed to have played a part, and I had the good fortune to interact with humble people highly regarded in their fields of specialty.
One such blogger ,Dr.Riyaz, Consultant diabetologist , was kind enough to seek a guest post on my experiences as a patient with medical professionals. A chance I would not miss , since I went through being hopeful, contemptuous, and wary of the doctors I had consulted in my life.
Dear readers, here is - Guest Post - My interaction with Doctors.

This one has left me with own baggage of complaints against doctors who either consider their patients as hens that lay golden eggs or as guinea pigs. Luckily we have a doctor in our family. Before following any specialist's prescription, I turn to him for advice. More often than not I don't follow prescriptions, waive off tests and feel much better;)
ReplyDeleteI understand Meenakshi. The same pattern goes in my family too. Often we hear the husbands complaining that we sisters do not take medical advice.:-).
DeleteThough having a doctor in the family would have been more handy.
I wish that the speciality of Family Medicine would be encouraged in India. However, the issue of overprescribing useless drugs has to be taken up at a different level. It would be good also if patients would become more informed about the medicines they receive.
ReplyDeleteWelcome here JK. Thanks for your wise comments. I too wish the Family Medicine is encouraged. The healing process can be more meaningful.
DeleteNow a days its too scary to even think of consulting a doctor...A patient seeks for little bit of comforting words and ease from his illness but its completely the reverse he gets..
ReplyDeleteI take care of my health with the help of yoga ,home remedies and if at all needed i go for Homoeopathy...(leaving accidental and surgical cases)
WElcome here Odyzz.
ReplyDeleteTrue, it is getting scary. There are many Allopathy doctors who are not drugging, but who are also not taking patients into confidence. We need to ask, and get replies.
Thanks a lot for this post. As I'm a medical student myself, this post gives me great guidance in deciding what kind of behaviour to avoid. I'm sure our generation will change this scenario drastically.
ReplyDeleteWelcome here Sourav Biswas. I am so touched by your spontaneous response. Treating with a heart , is a welcome for patients.
ReplyDeleteI am sure your generation will do this, and change many other things in this great country! Go ahead, you are our hope.
This reminds me of how broken our health care system is...? Doctors, are pushing more tests, more x-rays, cat scans. Drug companies push for newer drugs. It's MONEY, and all this is made through FEAR...I guess, turning medicines into 'not-for-profit'is the only solution...
ReplyDeleteAspiring doctors like Saurav Biswas give us a lot of hope...amen!
That is a beautiful last line Panchali.
DeleteThanks.
Great post, I left a comment there too. Amazing how much we have in common. And glad to find you on the internet too. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Grammy. It is amazing to connect with like minded people. I am so happy!!
DeleteWell written dear.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jeevan. Have a good week.
DeleteIts a very important topic. I read your post. :)
ReplyDeleteBut you should provide the link of your relevant post, and not Dr. Riyaz's blog - slowly your post would go down and people would miss it.

Thanks Anupama. That was an error, I corrected it today.
DeleteHi Pattu, you have been having quite an extensive experience of finding the right physician and endocrinologist for your treatment. Finally, it sounds like you find the right one who treats the cause.
ReplyDeleteI get the impression that the drug Co, drug business and the prescribing doctors' practice should be scrutinized based on your experience.
And, nice write up.
Hi Rathi, Thanks. Yes, Lots of experiences people have, but many cannot write bout it. Those of us who can use words for the expressions , need to share.
Deletehi how are you?... thanks for dropping in :)
ReplyDeletequite a detailed study of the scenario... but a physician may justify that he's a human being too which makes him... well leave his justification for now, may be I would blog that sometime in my blog :)
Cheers for good health and health for ALL!
Regards,
Anunoy Samanta

Thanks Anunoy. This is not a generalization of medical practitioners. It is only a few instances , of people whom I know since decades. I have known many , good doctors who have been kind!.

Went through the article and was quite shocked. I normally never need to consult doctors, and if needed, I go to couple of my college friends who are now doctors. So never knew of the true extent of malaise people have regarding visiting doctors. While in the US, I had visited a few doctors, the first time I consulted someone other than my friends, and I was pretty impressed. They are very careful even for small ailments, are very cautious, and will prescribe something after proper discussion. I guess the reason maybe due to fear of getting sued for incorrect prescription. Isn't there such an option in India?
ReplyDeleteWelcome here Ramakant.
DeleteShocking , if you are not having any experience with doctors here. But , this is the way the doctors behave all over India. My experiences are with known doctors, who behave like this with all their patients.I would say this is the way they have practiced over the years.
There are number of doctors at big flashy hospitals who do not care for anything ,except fees, and play with patient's lives. There are any number of people grumbling , out there.
Not that there are no good Doctors, but they are few and one has to scout for them.
Sue Doctor? . Not the middle class. Who has the time, energy and money to pay those lawyers, who are bigger problem:-).
Ethics is not part of practice in India. It is only some idealistic doctors who follow ethics.
You can choose , research and compare your doctor at www.sehat.com
ReplyDeleteThere are more than 2 lakh docs listed with detailed information .choose the best!
Well written article, you have covered almost all areas related to diabetes and diabetologists. Thanks for this..
