Effect of Gluten rich grain on Type 2 Diabetes

Though I don't write often on this topic, believe me , readers, I keep writing them in my head. I understand , how my fellow travellers with type 2 Diabetes , want to cope and live and enjoy life without the harmful blood glucose level rising.

In my rush for collecting as much information from the Internet, I have bookmarked scores of links which need to be read, sorted and linked. I read a lot, understood some, followed a few.

Out of this sea of information, I had stumbled upon Greenmedinfo.com. I subscribe to the newsletter and get lots of information . One such useful link is about gluten free foods.

I am sure many of you are aware of this problem stuff found in most grains, mainly in wheat. Now wheat is consumed a lot in India too, though rice plays a major part. When we are sharing our problem of Type 2 diabetes, general advice from our social circles is " Don't eat rice, eat Chapatis". Many of them also declare triumphantly that they eat only chapatis.

My experiment with monitoring blood glucose , led me to the conclusion that for me rice or chapati or many of the grains are not helpful at all. they only raised my Blood glucose levels alarmingly and gave me dire warnings to behave. I stopped consuming most of the grains, and found that it helped.

  1. very useful article! Everything that has starch will ultimately raise blood sugar level. Though I didn't know about gluten. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Thanks Meenakshi. For me Gluten indication was also giving high sugar level, so I avoid those, as far as possible.

  3. I have been reading about gluten too. Very often i see gluten-free items in the shops too! But didnt know it affected diabetic people so much !

  4. Hi Meoww, It does affect type 2 diabetics( some of them). In my case I found it raises my BG levels.

  6. I tried using hand pound rice for the family for better nutrition. My father started using it too and has found that his sugar levels are better controlled. Have you tried it?

    1. Hi Bikramjit, hope this helps. The deluge of information is so confusing, and are not Indian diet specific. If one wants to follow(or forced to), one has to use lot of imagination, and use of spices. It is a tiresome practice.

    this is what most of our patients do... try all sorts of grains from rice to wheat to ragi to bajra and finally end up in arugam pul juice.. its not the quality of the grain that matters but the quantity on ur plate.... what ever u do keep track of ur blood sugars... bye

  19. I should start reducing sugary foods from now on, at least. I have been eating a lot of biscuits, chocolates, ice creams, pastries & cakes without any check. I am not going to allow it to happen from now on. Is salt/butter biscuits better than normal biscuits? (just asking)

    1. Eating biscuits and chocolates in modest quantity should not bother non-diabetics. If you have Gluten intolerance , you may not desire eating biscuits! However, in case of doubt , better consult a medical professional.

  20. Thanks for stopping by my blog, I an grateful for your heart warming comment. And surprised to find you writing about type 2, My husband is now type 2 and like you I have done allot of research. I do not know if we have chapatis in our area. But will look. I have had good results with Green tea, And now trying an apple with 1 cinnamon capsule before 2 meals a day. It is said to block sugar and help in weight loss. We will see.     1. Welcome here Grammy. Nice to get a comment form a fellow blogger, learning about type 2 (husband's).

      Chapatis are not a must, the variety available locally itself will suffice.As I had written earlier, even Chapatis were not suitable for me.

      Our bodies go through high and low tolerance levels, and that is why , I check glucose levels daily. In fact, I have been indulging in food , due to festival season and many weddings, resulting in high fasting levels.A warning,and I am back to apples, cucumber, raw vegetables and soups :-). Hopefully , will stick to it.

  22. Hi Mam,

    Wonderful article, nowadays Type 2 diabetes, BP and Cholesterol have become common because we have forgotten traditional foods also less physical work. Instead of chapathi we can try millets which are gluten free and our regular upma, idli dosa can be made with no difference in taste. Also millets will not increase the blood glucose as fast as white rice and other refined products.
